Resolution on the situation in Burma

Resolution on the situation in Burma

9 Aug 2008

The people of Burma are speaking to us today in a language that has long been muted by systematic repression and fear. As we gather here at the 34th WSCF GA to celebrate life and diversity in the context of our faith, we think of those places where diversity is not celebrated, indeed silenced!

On August 8th the people of the world remember the atrocities which took place in Burma in 1988, and now 20 years later the oppression continues. As it stands there is no law, no order, no peace and no development in the country.
As the WSCF GA gathered here and now we hear the call to be prophets. We join the Burmese people who have courageously come forward by marching on the streets of Rangoon and in other parts of Burma to denounce the Military Government’s total disregard of the people’s right to freedom, democracy and self-determination.
Therefore resolve to:
- Denounce Burma Military Government’s violent response to suppress the legitimate right of the people to express their demand to seek redress and apology, genuine reconciliation and peace and to defend their lives and liberty.
- We urge our member movements in all the countries of Asia-Pacific and the global federation to join local actions and campaigns to support the people’s action in Burma. We continue to pray for the people of Burma, the leaders of protest actions, our friends and colleagues in the student movement and the Churches. May they be strengthened by our solidarity action and prayers as they struggle to seek peaceful change in their Country.
- We call upon the government to rescind the country’s new Constitution and begin the process of relinquishing power to a civilian government that is democratically elected
-We call for an end to the violence and oppression levelled at ethnic minorities that results in increasing numbers of refugees and internally displaced people
- We call for an immediate withdrawal of multinational corporations' economic activities in Burma, which provide support to the military regime
- We call for the release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners and for the government to both promote and protect people’s human rights.
- We call on the government of Burma that they should facilitate aid to those whose lives and homes were devastated by Cyclone.
