Federation calls for next quadrennium's leaders

WSCF is seeking highly competent and strongly committed persons to lead the Federation in the 2008-2012 quadrennium.

Applications are being called for the positions of global officers - WSCF Chairperson, Vice-Chairpersons, Treasurer and for the position/s of General Secretary/Co-Secretary General.

The search will be carried out by the 2008 Search Committee, who will oversee the process of calling for applications and assessing the qualities and skills of applicants for presentation to the Federation's 34th General Assembly in August 2008.

The Search Committtee is composed of six people from each of the WSCF regions and includes students, senior friends, women and men.

The Search Committee is chaired by Prof. Wong Wai Ching (former WSCF Chairperson and former Asia-Pacific Regional Secretary). Other members of the committee are: Mr. Abraham Chikasa (Zambia, ExCo), Ms. Inger Lise Olsen (Norway, Centennial Fund Board), Ms. Veronica Biech (student, Argentina), Ms. Sossy Sarkissian (Lebanon) and Mr. Luciano Kovacs (North America Regional Secretary).

The deadline for applications is June 1st, 2008. Applications can be either emailed or faxed. Please send one copy of applications directly to Prof. Wong Wai Ching at waiching@cuhk.edu.hk and one copy to the Search Committee at wscf@wscf.ch.

Candidates must be available for interviews in Montreal on July 28. The new officers will begin their term with the first meeting of the new Executive Committee on August 10th. The Co-Secretary General/General Secretary's term will begin from January 2009.

World Student Christian Federation Officer Job Descriptions

1. From WSCF’s constitution and bye-laws
Chairperson
The Chairperson will be in regular contact with the Co-Secretaries General (General Secretary), offering advice and personal support and ensuring that the goals and priorities of the Federation are acted upon. This support will be especially important on controversial or delicate matters faced by the Federation.

Honorary Treasurer
The Treasurer is empowered to be the chief fiscal agent of the WSCF, providing continual monitoring of the fiscal affairs of the WSCF, with the authority to take emergency steps if required to protect the financial stability and integrity of the WSCF between meetings of the Officers or Executive Committee. The Treasurer chairs the finance committee and serves as a member of the Centennial Fund Board of Trustees.

Vice Chairperson(s)
The functions of the Vice-Chairpersons (one or two) include deputising for the Chairperson, and other specific roles as suggested by the Executive Committee. One Vice-Chairperson will chair the Personnel Committee of the ExCo. One Vice-Chairperson must be a student at time of election.

2. Overview of responsibilities

1. Accountable to the General Assembly;
2. Chairing meetings (Executive Committee, General Assembly and other meetings where required;
3. Nurturing the worldwide fellowship and preserving the unity of the Federation;
4. Interpreting the work and needs of the Federation to churches and the wider ecumenical movement;
5. Supporting the work of the executive staff of the Federation;
6. Ensuring that the goals, priorities and mandate of the General Assembly are acted upon in accordance with the Constitution.

Honorary Treasurer
1. Protect the financial stability and integrity of the Federation;
2. Interpretation of the work of the Federation aimed at fundraising;
3. As a de facto member of the Board of Trustees of the Centennial Fund, to provide the link between the Executive Committee and the Board of Trustees;
4. To present financial reports and analyses to the Executive Committee and the General Assembly;
5. To work in collaboration with staff in drawing up financial reports and draft budgets;
6. To oversee the work of the Finance Committee and facilitate decision-making on financial matters.

3.World Student Christian Federation Co-Secretary General/General Secretary Job Description

Co-Secretary General Job Description
The WSCF Constitution provides for two Co-Secretaries General to share overall executive responsibility for the Federation and to co-ordinate its work at the global level. However, current financial limitations require WSCF to leave one of these posts vacant, meaning that the Executive Committee appointed only one General Secretary in August 2004.

The Co-Secretary General is accountable both to the Executive Committee and the General Assembly and is mainly responsible for the implementation of decisions made by both bodies. The tasks and responsibilities of the position include:

1. Enabling movement building at the national level through visits, correspondence and various forms of communication as well as the implementation of projects aimed at addressing specific needs related to the consolidation of national movements;

2. Conceptualisation and implementation of global programmes as mandated by the General Assembly;

3. Organisation of the General Assembly, Executive Committee and other statutory meetings as well as executive staff meetings;

4. Fundraising for WSCF programmes and the general budget as well as initiate thinking and conceptualisation of fundraising strategies with regional executive staff;

5. Financial and general administration of the inter-regional office;

6. Financial and general administration of the Ecumenical Assistance Program (EAP) and the Centennial Fund;

7. Interpretation of the Federation’s work and vision to churches, ecumenical bodies and other organisations;

8. Stimulate and facilitate the articulation of a global analysis and theology as well as the development of new strategies aimed at making the Federation’s work more effective and relevant at national, regional and global levels.
